Having just returned from the World Cheese Awards (WCA) 2024 in the beautiful city of Viseu, Portugal, I am still basking in the memories of an incredible event. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, the WCA is a truly global celebration of cheese, bringing together cheesemakers, experts, and enthusiasts from across the world.
This year’s competition was especially meaningful—not only because of the calibre of cheeses showcased but also because of the personal pride I felt watching our company’s entrant, Dom Jones, perform so admirably in the Young Cheesemonger of the Year competition. It was also a privilege to witness the announcement of next year’s host city, which added an air of excitement and anticipation to the final moments of this year’s awards.
Setting the Scene in Viseu
The picturesque city of Viseu provided a perfect backdrop for this year’s World Cheese Awards. Its cobbled streets, historic charm, and warm hospitality made it an exceptional host city. Known as a cultural gem of Portugal, Viseu exuded an energy that reflected the passion and craftsmanship showcased at the awards.
With judges, cheesemakers, and cheese lovers gathering from across 40 nations, the event had a distinctly international feel. Walking into the competition space, surrounded by tables laden with cheeses from 47 countries, was awe-inspiring and set the stage for a day filled with discovery and camaraderie.
The Judging Experience
As a judge, I had the privilege of sampling an extraordinary range of cheeses. This year saw a record-breaking 4,786 entries, each judged on appearance, aroma, texture, mouthfeel, and flavour. Our judging table featured a diverse selection, from young and creamy cheeses to aged, complex varieties that showcased the skill and artistry of their makers.
The process of awarding medals—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—was rigorous but rewarding. We also selected a Super Gold cheese from our table to be assessed by the prestigious Super Jury, who would eventually crown the World Champion Cheese.
The Winning Cheese
The highlight of the awards was the announcement of the World Champion Cheese, and this year’s winner did not disappoint. Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado, a spoonable sheep’s milk cheese from Quinta do Pomar in Portugal, stole the show. Its silky, buttery texture and the distinctive herbal bitterness of thistle rennet made it a standout entry.
Hearing cheesemaker Sonia Marroyo’s heartfelt reaction to her win was incredibly moving. To have her cheese recognised as the best in the world, so close to where it was crafted, was a poignant reminder of the deep connection between cheese and its terroir.
Celebrating Dom Jones and the Young Cheesemonger Competition
This year was especially meaningful for our company, as Dom Jones represented us in the Young Cheesemonger of the Year competition. Watching Dom showcase his expertise and passion for cheese was a proud moment. His confidence and skill were evident throughout the competition, and he was a true credit to our team.
While the title went to Daniel Iliev of Paxton & Whitfield, Dom’s performance was nothing short of outstanding. He left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance and demonstrated the bright future of young talent in the cheese world.
An Exciting Announcement for 2025
The culmination of this year’s awards came with a thrilling announcement made during the closed judges' dinner. In keeping with tradition, next year’s host city was revealed in a moment of excitement as a representative from Switzerland took the stage.
We are delighted to share that the 2025 World Cheese Awards will be held in Bern, Switzerland. Known for its alpine beauty and rich cheese heritage, Bern promises to be a spectacular setting for the next chapter of the WCA. The announcement sparked a wave of enthusiasm, with many already looking forward to experiencing Swiss hospitality and its world-renowned cheeses.
Exploring Viseu
Beyond the competition, Viseu offered countless opportunities to soak in the local culture. From its lively markets and traditional Portuguese dishes to its breathtaking scenery, the city was a joy to explore. Pairing local wines with cheese from the event was a particular highlight and a testament to the region’s culinary excellence.
